Why Are Phones and Laptops Getting More Expensive? AI May Be Part of the Reason

Buying a new smartphone or laptop is becoming a little more complicated.

For years, consumers became used to getting more memory, faster processors and better technology without seeing dramatic increases in prices. But the technology industry is now facing a different problem: memory chips are becoming increasingly valuable and difficult to secure.

One of the biggest reasons is the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence.

AI might seem like something that mainly affects chatbots and software. Behind the scenes, however, AI data centers require enormous amounts of specialized hardware and memory.

And that demand is starting to affect the devices people use every day.

AI Needs a Lot of Memory

Modern AI systems process huge amounts of information.

To do that efficiently, data centers use specialized memory technologies such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM) alongside conventional DRAM and other memory products.

The growing demand for AI servers has increased pressure on memory manufacturers. TrendForce reported on September 7 that AI-server demand, including demand related to large language model training and inference, is helping drive higher shipments of HBM and other high-capacity memory products. At the same time, supplier inventories remain very low.

That creates a difficult situation for manufacturers.

More production capacity is being directed toward areas where demand and margins are strong, while consumer electronics manufacturers still need memory for phones, laptops and other devices.

What Does This Have to Do With Your Smartphone?

Your smartphone needs memory to run apps, switch between tasks and keep data available while you're using the device.

The same broad memory supply chain also supports laptops, desktops, gaming devices and many other electronics.

When memory becomes more expensive, manufacturers have several choices.

They can:

Reduce the amount of memory included

Absorb some of the additional cost

Push customers toward more expensive models

This doesn't mean every smartphone will suddenly become much more expensive.

But it does mean memory costs can become another factor influencing the final price.

Laptops and PCs Could Feel the Pressure Too

Computers are particularly sensitive to memory costs because RAM is an important part of the hardware configuration.

Recent industry reporting has linked the global memory shortage to higher PC prices and weaker shipment volumes.

For buyers, this could create an unusual situation.

A newer laptop might offer better AI capabilities and performance, but the same device could also cost more because some of its components have become more expensive to manufacture.

That's an important reminder that the price of technology isn't determined only by the processor or the features advertised on the box.

Why AI Is Changing the Hardware Market

The AI boom is creating demand for more than just powerful processors.

Large amounts of electricity and cooling

J.P. Morgan Global Research has described memory as a major bottleneck for AI expansion and says the resulting shortage can have wider effects on prices and other industries.

In other words, the AI revolution isn't happening only inside software.

It is changing the physical technology industry too.

Does This Mean You Should Buy a New Phone Now?

Not necessarily.

If your current phone or laptop works well, there is no reason to replace it simply because memory prices are rising.

However, if you were already planning to buy a new device, it may be worth comparing prices carefully.

Look at:

RAM capacity

Storage capacity

Processor generation

Battery life

Software-support period

Upgrade options

Overall price rather than just one specification

A device with slightly less impressive specifications can sometimes provide better value if it is significantly cheaper.

What About Budget Smartphones?

Budget devices could face additional pressure because manufacturers have less room to absorb higher component costs.

Industry reporting has already highlighted the impact of the memory crunch on India's smartphone market, with manufacturers facing higher costs as memory production shifts toward AI-related demand.

Companies may have to find a balance between keeping prices affordable and maintaining useful specifications.

Will Memory Prices Eventually Come Down?

Probably—but the timing is difficult to predict.

But the current AI build-out makes this cycle different from an ordinary consumer-electronics slowdown.

TrendForce expects conventional DRAM contract-price growth to moderate to around 13–18% quarter-over-quarter in Q3 2026, but it still describes the market as extremely tight.

That suggests the pressure may not disappear immediately.

The Bigger Picture

The interesting part of this story isn't simply that RAM or smartphones may become more expensive.

It's that AI is beginning to influence products that have nothing obvious to do with AI.

A person who never uses an AI chatbot may still feel the effects of the AI boom when buying a phone, laptop, gaming device or other electronic product.

That's because the AI industry depends on the same global semiconductor ecosystem that supports much of modern consumer technology.
